Nigerian contoversial singer/rapper "Maheeda" recently signed an international management deal with Bigjamz World Entertainment, a company based in Europe. Maheeda who is also signed to her own record label "Yes-Mah Records" is indeed ready to take the African entertainment to another dimension.

The controversial singer/rapper who has been in the industry for quite some time now made several moves as a way to spice up her brand, after releasing few of her singles/videos and also nominated for NMVA years back, she is back on a project with the newly signed management company tagged #TheNewMaheeda

Bigjamz World Entertainment CEO Barbara Kotsoni says: Maheeda is one hell of act and once you see her as a brand you will definitely understand and appreciate her the more, it might take a long while for Nigerians to accept her as a brand but the European, Asia n and other market already see her as one.

Woolworths Set To Leave Nigerian Market

The announcement that South African retailer Woolworths is set to pull out of Nigeria due to high rental costs and supply chain challenges caught retail analysts unawares.

This is against the backdrop of rising trend of retail mall constructions in Nigeria, the type of locations preferred by Woolworths and other such retail businesses including Shoprite, Game etc.

Following the success of The Palms Shopping Mall in Lekki- Lagos, other malls have since sprung up in other locations in Lagos namely Ikeja Shopping Mall, E-Centre Yaba, Galleria Victoria Island and also in other towns such as Abuja, Enugu, Ibadan and Benin.

In a statement, Woolworths which already has three retail outlets in Nigeria said "The Nigerian business was unable to sustain a compelling product and value proposition which represents the brand well, and meets the needs of the Nigerian customer".

While this may seem like good news for the fledgling indigenous fashion industry in Nigeria, it does not however paint a good picture for the county. Officials of the Federal Ministry of Trade & Commerce and other government agencies have been touring the world in search of foreign direct investments (FDIs). It does then appear that the competitive environment in Nigeria is still not very suitable. If Woolworths closes shop, they would take with them their fashion retail operations experience which would have impacted on the local retail industry in Nigeria. There will also be job losses and decrease in nation brand equity. Such negative business news will erode whatever little gains that may have been made by the recently launched 'Fascinating Nigeria' repositioning campaign. This is because no nation can claim to be a favorite destination for trade and investments if foreign businesses in such a country are closing shop as a result of unfavourable competitive business environment.

Government should look into some of the concerns raised by Woolworths and other businesses operating in Nigeria. For example, what is the reason for the high rental costs? Could this be as a result of high interest loans secured by the mall developers and the need to recoup back within the shortest possible time as the political and economic terrain continues to appear unpredictable?

Government should also do something about supply chain challenges. Woolworths imports the bulk of the goods it sells from abroad. Reports in the past have shown the difficulties faced by importers in clearing their goods out of Nigerian airports and seaports. The challenges include both administrative bureaucracy and multiple taxation. There is also the nightmare of transporting the goods out of the ports in Apapa and the traffic gridlock caused by bad roads.

 Addressing these challenges will help to enhance the competitive business environment in Nigeria and make the market more attractive for both local businesses and foreign investors.

 

FG Takes On India Over Killing Of Nigerian

Federal Government has demanded an unreserved apology from the Indian authorities over the death of a Nigerian, Obodo Uzoma Simeon, and discriminatory attacks on Nigerians in the Asian nation.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, disclosed this while answering questions from journalists at the pre-Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting press briefing in Abuja, Monday.

Tensions between Nigerians and Indians had escalated since Simeon was found dead in Goa, a popular tourist destination, in the country's west region.

Simeon, according to reports, was stabbed to death on October 31 in Panaji, Goa State's capital.

About 200 angry members of the Nigerian community were said to have blocked a highway while Simeon's corpse was being taken to the hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Police reportedly brought the situation under control and registered cases of rioting, arson and damaging public property against 51 Nigerians and one Ghanaian.

Onwuliri, who emphasised that Nigeria would not tolerate any act of unruly behaviour from its citizens, however, said the conduct of Indian authorities was unacceptable.

She told journalists that the Acting Head of Mission of India in Nigeria had been summoned to her office to explain the rationale for the action.

She said, "Actually the growing violence around the countries should be a thing of worry for member states and for us in Nigeria too. We have continued to condemn violence especially against Nigerians in different states. The recent one in India is really a big one to worry about and I had summoned the acting head of Indian Mission to ask him about what happened to our citizens.

"The young man was coming back from lunch, they said there was a clash between two communities, he was not part of them but he was killed! We have also asked for unreserved apology from India, we have asked them to ensure that full-fledged investigations are carried out so that perpetrators of that act will be brought to book," she added.

The minister said the Nigerian government would not hesitate to react appropriately if Nigerians were evicted from their homes in India.

"We have also heard that some of our citizens protested and were arrested and some were evicted from their homes. And we have also said while we are not supporting lawlessness, if Nigerians reacted because of extreme provocation, it should be so seen. And these Nigerians should be released and people should not be evicted from their homes, otherwise, that will also lead to a strain in the relations between the two countries and we will be forced to also react appropriately," she maintained.

Onwuliri said Nigeria was determined to press on with the call for the abolition of visa regime among Commonwealth countries at this year's  meeting starting  on Wednesday (tomorrow) in Colombo, Srilanka.

The country's interim position is for the introduction of a pilot scheme which will facilitate visa free regime for holders of diplomatic and official passports from member countries.

Liverpool Appoint Former Miss World As Presenter Of LFC TV

The 29-year-old, the daughter of singer Chris de Burgh, is a popular figure in Ireland where she is a model but her job for Liverpool is her first in broadcasting outside of her home country.

Davison has already shot two 30-minute programmes for Liverpool, to document the club's greatest-ever Irish, and international, players. Both are expected to air in 2013.

Chinese Businessman Pays Model To Breastfeed Him During Business Banquet

Businessman offered a young model 100,000 yuan ($16,430) to breastfeed him during a group dinner in Jiujiang, China. And, astonishingly, she accepted.

Mo Lulu, a young singer and model, gained nationwide notoriety after circulating a series of "body mooncake" photos online in September, in which she had men eating mooncakes off her nude body. She grabbed eyeballs again at the Jiujiang automobile show on Friday, standing next to luxury automobiles in alluring poses and scanty underwear.

She then lay on a stage and allowed people to place fruit on her body. This time, she has gone one step further. China National Radio reported on its website that at a private dinner after the automobile show, Mo breastfed a man who paid her 100,000 yuan ($16,430).

According to the report, the businessman called Mo "mom" every time he took a sip. Other people at the dinner took photos and uploaded them online. Once again Mo has become a target on Chinese social media. "WTF, really whoever breastfeeds you is your mother huh?!" a commenter posted on Weibo. Another wrote, "Your mother is really young, just like your daughter." While some people condemned Mo for her shameless self promotion, others asked if her behaviour not only violated moral standards but also broke the law. "Doesn't this count as prostitution in public?

 What is the police department doing?" a commenter from Zhenzhou wrote on Weibo. Cui Xinjiang, a lawyer from Henan province said, "This case violates laws regarding acts of prostitution, but it is not a criminal offence. However, both the businessman and the model should be jailed for 10 to 15 days and fined, according to The Regulations on Administrative Penalties for Public Security."

He also explained that whether the local police took any action depended on the motivation for circulating the photos. If the aim was only to promote the model and create a sensation, usually the police department wouldn't get involved.
