FG Takes On India Over Killing Of Nigerian

Federal Government has demanded an unreserved apology from the Indian authorities over the death of a Nigerian, Obodo Uzoma Simeon, and discriminatory attacks on Nigerians in the Asian nation.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, disclosed this while answering questions from journalists at the pre-Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting press briefing in Abuja, Monday.

Tensions between Nigerians and Indians had escalated since Simeon was found dead in Goa, a popular tourist destination, in the country's west region.

Simeon, according to reports, was stabbed to death on October 31 in Panaji, Goa State's capital.

About 200 angry members of the Nigerian community were said to have blocked a highway while Simeon's corpse was being taken to the hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Police reportedly brought the situation under control and registered cases of rioting, arson and damaging public property against 51 Nigerians and one Ghanaian.

Onwuliri, who emphasised that Nigeria would not tolerate any act of unruly behaviour from its citizens, however, said the conduct of Indian authorities was unacceptable.

She told journalists that the Acting Head of Mission of India in Nigeria had been summoned to her office to explain the rationale for the action.

She said, "Actually the growing violence around the countries should be a thing of worry for member states and for us in Nigeria too. We have continued to condemn violence especially against Nigerians in different states. The recent one in India is really a big one to worry about and I had summoned the acting head of Indian Mission to ask him about what happened to our citizens.

"The young man was coming back from lunch, they said there was a clash between two communities, he was not part of them but he was killed! We have also asked for unreserved apology from India, we have asked them to ensure that full-fledged investigations are carried out so that perpetrators of that act will be brought to book," she added.

The minister said the Nigerian government would not hesitate to react appropriately if Nigerians were evicted from their homes in India.

"We have also heard that some of our citizens protested and were arrested and some were evicted from their homes. And we have also said while we are not supporting lawlessness, if Nigerians reacted because of extreme provocation, it should be so seen. And these Nigerians should be released and people should not be evicted from their homes, otherwise, that will also lead to a strain in the relations between the two countries and we will be forced to also react appropriately," she maintained.

Onwuliri said Nigeria was determined to press on with the call for the abolition of visa regime among Commonwealth countries at this year's  meeting starting  on Wednesday (tomorrow) in Colombo, Srilanka.

The country's interim position is for the introduction of a pilot scheme which will facilitate visa free regime for holders of diplomatic and official passports from member countries.

16-Year-Old Nigerian/American Girl Among The 50 Smartest Teenagers In The World

Nigerian girl, Saheela Ibraheem, whose name has been buzzing in the headlines lately as a promising talent, has reserved a place among "The World's 50 Smartest Teenagers" list.

The young girl, only 16, made it to headlines earlier this year when she was accepted into Harvard University, making her one of the youngest students ever to attend that school.

 Making a record in the US, Saheela was accepted at 13 other colleges, including prestigious MIT, the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, Brown, Princeton, Columbia, and the University of Chicago.

In the end, Saheela chose Harvard, based on her seven-year-old brother's advice who also dreams of being admitted to Harvard.

Saheela believes the key to success is knowing what you love to learn as early as possible, a knowledge she says she achieved at age five. Known as polite and humble, the Muslim prodigy said that her Nigerian parents, totally supportive of the young scholar, sometimes taught her subjects the schools didn't offer. Saheela, who dons the Islamic veil, or hijab, plays softball, soccer, and the trombone.

She also sings in the school choir and serves as president of the school's investment club. The promising girl plans to major in either neurobiology or neuroscience, and hopes to become a scientist in order to study how the brain works.

 Despite her activities, she said her number one priority was her family. "I try my best in everything I do," Saheela said, confirming that there is nothing special about her brain. "Anyone who's motivated can work wonders."

Court frees Osun Monarch of raping NYSC member,says they had a regular sexual relationship

Justice Oyejide Falola of the Osun State High Court sitting in Ikirun on Tuesday gave the verdict today, putting an end to a three-year sexual case that has brought national attention on the traditional king, the Alowa of Ilowa-Ijesa, Oba Adebukola Alli, and his accuser, Helen Okpara.

Delivering judgment, Falola said that the plaintiff, Miss Helen Okpara, failed to tender enough exhibits to convince the court beyond reasonable doubt that she was raped by the monarch.

 The judge also held that the plaintiff, who accused the #monarch of raping her at his private residence in Osogbo, failed to prove that she was raped.

 He said a case of #rape could only be established with exhibits such as bed sheet, the victim’s pant and a medical report indicating forceful penetration, adding that the prosecutor failed to tender all these.Falola said Okpara also failed to show the bruises on her private part as evidence that she was raped.

 He further said the prosecutor failed to show to the court the plaintiff’s torn clothes as she had claimed in her submissions before the court.

 While stressing that a case of rape must be proved with injuries sustained on the private part as well as other parts of the body, Falola said the court was not convinced that Okpara sustained any injury.

 Falola said the court was able to establish the fact that Okpara and the monarch had been having regular sexual #relationship before a misunderstanding ensued between them.

 He, however, condemned such relationship involving a traditional ruler, saying his action had brought his stool into disrepute as well as disgrace to his family and community.

  "I was raped by the Alowa of Ilowa on Friday, March 25. Before then, I had been introduced to the monarch during the last INEC registration exercise.

"One day, on my way from the school, Oba Alli gave me a ride and told me that he wanted me to be a computer facilitator for the schools in the community. That was after he got to know that I was computer literate and we drew a plan on the format the assignment would take." She explained that she later had a session with the students and after introducing the system to them, the traditional ruler offered to take her back to school. But instead of dropping her at the school, he reportedly took her to his residence in Osogbo, a few kilometers to her place of primary assignment.

 "He said I should not worry, that he would bring me back home and eventually we arrived at his residence in Osogbo where he entertained me. It was getting late and I wanted to go home as he started to caress me. I got up begging him, but he turned down my pleas,"

She explained further that the monarch later stripped her and went outside to soak her clothes, stressing that before he came back, she had locked the door.

Agagu’s Burial May Still Hold Tomorrow Despite Unfortunate Plane Crash

Indications have emerged that despite the incident of plane crash involving the corpse of the late Agagu and some of his family member in Lagos today, the family of the deceased and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are insisting of going on with the burial ceremony tomorrow at Iju Odo in Okitipupa local government.

DailyPost gathered that the family had already sent a team to Lagos to convey the corpse which was said to be intact despite the crash which claimed over 11 souls including a Commissioner in Ondo State, Mr. Deji Falae. The family said since Agagu's son, Feyi and daughters in-law survived the crash, nothing would stop the burial.
A source had disclosed that Feyi, had spoke with his mother and other family members, an indication that he was in good condition.
However, A former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP], Chief Olusola Oke, who was in distress said, "the disasters are tasking our souls and breaking our hearts. Oke, who was flanked by other PDP Chieftains, said "at a time we were thinking of giving triumphant entry for a peaceful commitment to mother earth, of our great leader, this disaster struck to shake his biological, political and social families to their very existence.

"While we commiserate with the families of those who lost their lives, we thank God for saving the life of the late Agagu only son, [Feyi] for the sake of sustaining the former governor's dynasty.

"We were also full of praises that the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo son, Gbenga who was on board of the plane has also been reported to have survived the ordeal.
Oke called for full investigations of the disaster, which he attributed to carelessness or sabotage.
He also thanked God that Agagu's remains were intact saying "our leader will still be given the deserved burial, part of which had already started".
According to the PDP leader, all praise should also go to those who rescued the survivors of the plane crash, stressing that the burial would resume with minimal delay after due consultation with Agagu's family and the state government.
The State PDP Chairman, Mr. Ebenezer Alabi said the late Agagu does not deserve what is happening to him, saying "we are still very shock, but we are consoled that his heir-apparent did not die, that is the only joy we have.
Also, the Deputy Governorship Candidate of PDP, Hon. Saka Lawal called for prayers in the state, adding that the people need to move closer to God for deliverance.
"Ondo State needs prayer. What has happened is just for us to move closer to God. I will like to say, this has never occurred in the history of Ondo State. I will like to sympathize with the people of the state. It is unfortunate that our dear state is going through this kind of disaster. Again, we need prayer; everybody must come together for divine intervention from the hands of the evil forces". Lawal said.
When Daily Post visited the residence of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation [SGF], Chief Olu Falae who is the father of the Commissioner, sympathizers were in prayer session for the survival of Deji, the Commissioner.
We also observed that Falae, who was surrounded by two friends kept mum, and only responded in Yoruba Language by saying "E se oo, E se oo" meaning "thank you, thank you” repeatedly.

President Jonathan Mourns Victims Of Lagos Plane Crash As He Orders Investigation

President Goodluck Jonathan has received with great shock and sadness, news of the tragic airplane crash in Lagos earlier today.

On behalf of himself, his family and the Federal Government, President Jonathan extends condolences to all families who lost members in the plane crash, and the government and people of Ondo State who have been plunged into sorrow yet again while preparing to lay their former governor to rest.
The President feels and shares the grief and pain of the Agagu family as they grapple with the further loss of beloved relatives and associates so soon after losing their husband, father and mentor.

He prays that God Almighty will comfort the  Agagu family, as well as their relatives and friends, and grant them the divine grace they will undoubtedly require to overcome the trauma of this most trying time.

President Jonathan views the plane crash as most unfortunate and regrettable, given the concerted efforts of the Federal Government to enhance aviation safety in the country.

He has therefore ordered a thorough investigation of the crash by all relevant agencies with a view to determining the cause and taking further actions, as may become necessary.
