Man In Court For Raping Girl He Met On Facebook

The Nigerian police in Lagos on Wednesday arraigned a 34-year-old man, Omowuyi Kelvin, over alleged rape of a 25-year old girl he met on Facebook.

Kelvin, who was charged before an Isheri Magistrates' Court, lives at Shangisha, a suburb of Lagos.

He is facing a two-count charge of rape and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Nurudeen Thomas, told the court that the accused committed the offences at 8.00p.m., on 15 October at his residence.

"The accused invited his victim all the way from Benin to Lagos.

"On arrival, the accused unlawfully detained her for five days in a room, had carnal knowledge of her and stripped her of N5,000, among other valuables," he said.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 258 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 258 provides for life imprisonment for rape, while Section 285 prescribes three years imprisonment for theft.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.

Senior Magistrate Adejumoke Olagbegi-Adelabu granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case till to 27 October for substantive trial.

On 22 July, 2012, Cynthia Osokogwu, a post-graduate student of Nasarawa State University and a clothing retailer was murdered in Lagos by friends she met on FaceBook.

They lured her to a hotel in FESTAC Town, drugged and raped her before she was murdered.

Federal Government of Nigeria Prepares For Likely Independence Day Attack

Security  agencies have beefed up security across the 36 states of the federation as Nigeria prepares to  celebrate its 53rd Independence anniversary on Tuesday.

Although  President Goodluck Jonathan would celebrate the Independence anniversary inside Aso Rock, a police helicopter was seen carrying out aerial patrol of Abuja on Friday as part of security measures.

Also police commands across the country have mapped out various security measures to forestall  violence during the celebration by paying special attention to churches, open fields and stadia.

This is  coming shortly after the attack on a Kenyan mall that left over 60 persons dead.

The United States on Thursday said the group responsible for the attack, Al-Shabab, had links with the violent Boko Haram sect.

 A few days ago, Boko Haram leader, Abu Shekau, resurfaced in a new video weeks after the military reportedly killed him.

 Shekau, in the video, threatened that more attacks would  occur.

 On Saturday, President Barack Obama described Boko Haram as "one of the most vicious terrorist organisations in the world."

 Already, in Ogun State,   the police has put in place an operational order for the Independence  anniversary.

 The Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the order would serve as a guide to the officers and men of the command in performing their duties throughout the  period.

 One of our correspondents  gathered that the Assistant Inspector  General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Mamman Tsafe, held a  meeting on Friday with the top officers in the command.

Regarding security at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, venue of the Independence celebrations in the state, the police spokesman said men of the anti-bomb squad and police sniffer dogs had been deployed in the stadium.

 Similarly, the 35 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Alamala, Abeokuta said its troops had been put on alert.

 The Brigade's Public Relations Officer, Captain Adamu Ngulde,  said  troops attached to the state's anti-crime outfit, Operation Messa, were already maintaining tight security in different parts of the state.

 Ngulde added that the brigade had enough troops on ground to contain any situation in the state.

Akwa Ibom
The Police Public Relations Officer in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Etim Dickson, said the police had deployed more vehicles, particularly the Eagle 1-6, to complement the Quick Response Squad vehicles.
He stated that the QRS operations had also been extended to remote areas where they did not have presence.
"We have deployed more vehicles, particularly in Eagle  Patrol 1-6, which were  donated by the Niger Delta  Development Commission to complement the existing QRS to give adequate security towards Nigeria's anniversary celebration," he said.

 

Cross River

The Cross Rivers State Security Adviser, Mr. Rekpene Bassey, told Sunday PUNCH on Friday that a combined team of all security agencies had been mandated to guard specific areas.
Even though he did not disclose the 'specific areas,' he said, "Deliberate efforts have been made by placing all security agencies on red alert."

Osun
One of our correspondents reports that  police patrol vans as well as vehicles with armed soldiers have been patrolling Osogbo and other major towns in the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mra. Folashade Odoro, said, "We assure the people of the state of water-tight security during the 53rd Independence Anniversary of our nation. Our men are all over and police presence will be seen."

Kwara

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olufemi Fabode, said some policemen from other divisions and area commands in the state had been drafted to Ilorin, the state capital.

He stated that the command had stepped up motorised patrols, adding that he would not reveal other security measures so as not to jeopardise them.

Rivers

Similarly, the Rivers State Police Command said it had put measures in place to ensure a hitch-free Independence Day celebration.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, who spoke in a telephone interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, explained that the command would leave no stone unturned to prevent crime during Nigeria's Independence Day celebration.

Ondo

The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Wole Ogodo, said the police was in collaborating with  military formations towards ensuring a hitch-free celebration.
He said, "We do not know whether the celebration will be low-key or not, but whichever the case, our men will be fully deployed at the stadium and other venues in Akure as well as all the local government areas where the celebration will be held."

 

Oyo

On its part, the Oyo State Police Command said more of its men would be deployed in strategic positions.
The state's Police Public Relation Officer, Olabisi Ilobanafor, told one of our correspondents in Ibadan on Friday that the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Ndabawa, had directed all divisional police officers in the state to ensure that places of public interest and their communities must be well guarded during the period.

She said, "We are not expecting any public disturbance but as usual, it is the duty of the police to protect everyone. We are in a special period and we are stepping up our work to ensure that the state is safe for everyone.

Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command  said measures were being put in place to ensure the safety of lives and property during the  anniversary.

The command's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, made this known to one of our correspondents, but declined stating the specific security measures being mapped out for the day.

Aso Rock

SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that the Independence celebration event scheduled for Aso Rock would be strictly military.

 

The military event that will hold at the forecourt of the villa will be the commemorative handing and taking over by the presidential guards.

 

The President is also expected to sign the anniversary register, cut the anniversary cake and perform the traditional release of pigeons that signifies peace.

 

On Friday, men of the Presidential Brigade of Guards were seen rehearsing at the venue of the event.

 

They were joined by other security operatives that would be on duty on Tuesday as well as officials of the Protocol Unit of the State House.

 

Some officials of the Protocol Unit were also sighted dispatching invitation letters to dignitaries that are expected at the event.

 

Those expected include the leadership of the National Assembly and the judiciary, former heads of governments,  members of the Federal Executive Council as well as members of the diplomatic corps, among others.

 

Workers of the construction company, Julius Berger, who are handling the villa's maintenance, were also seen on Friday re-painting the walls of the forecourt.

 

A twin bomb blast had on October 1, 2010 rocked the neighbourhood of the Eagle Square, Abuja, venue of the nation's 50th Independence anniversary celebration.  The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta claimed responsibility for the blast.

 

Although many believed that the government's decision to  hold the 2011 event and subsequent ones inside the villa was a way of avoiding the embarrassment another bomb blast might cause the nation, the government said the decision had nothing to do with that.

 

Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, had attributed the low-key nature of the anniversary to the fact that Nigeria had had cause to hold two huge national events — the 50th Independence anniversary in 2010 and the May 29, 2011 presidential inauguration that attracted world leaders.

President Goodluck Jonathan had also said the nation's independence celebration would continue to be low-key until 2014 when the 100 years of the country's amalgamation would be celebrated elaborately.

The one-year long activities earmarked for the centenary celebration which started this year would be rounded off in January 2014.

Body of 2yr-old found buried in Church premises in Lagos

 

The pastor (names withheld) has been arrested over the alleged murder of the child.

 Although details of investigation were still sketchy at press time, it was gathered that the pastor was allegedly caught burying the dead child in a shallow grave within the church premises.

 

 

 

It was learnt that the said pastor was caught by a neighbor, who had gone out to ease himself at 2a.m., weekend, digging the grave. The neighbour, whose identity was not disclosed, was said to have alerted other residents.

They were said to have reported their findings to policemen at Idimu Division, consequent upon which a team was drafted to the church.

The policemen, as gathered, dug the shallow grave where they discovered and exhumed the body of a baby girl. The body was deposited at the mortuary.

AN elderly man accused of robbing a San Diego bank wasn’t interested in remaining silent about his alleged crimes.

During his arrest, he blurted out to a TV reporter: “I rob banks. It’s my hobby,” and told the judge during his first court appearance: “I’m guilty as charged.”
Dale E Jenkins, 78, was arrested Monday for robbing a Comerica Bank branch by threatening to throw acid in the teller’s face, an online news media, SanDiego6.com reported.
During the robbery, he was dressed in a three-piece suit and fedora. After receiving his money, he allegedly left the bank carrying his ill-gotten loot in a rolling suitcase and was picked up two blocks away, another online news media, NBCSanDiego.com, reported.
Jenkins reportedly netted only $80 from the bank, but it was what he said to KGTV-TV reporter, Allison Ash, during his arrest that was truly priceless.
“I rob banks. It’s my hobby,” he said, adding that this robbery was his seventh. “Somebody needs to take care of the veterans in this country.”
Jenkins’ confession spree didn’t end there.
During his first court appearance on Tuesday, he blurted out to the judge, “I’m guilty as charged and do not want to go through any long trial. I can’t live on the streets anymore,” KGTV-TV reported.
The judge cut him off, warning him that anything he said will be used during a trial, according to the station.
Despite Jenkins’ advanced age, officials said there’s no evidence he might be the Geezer Bandit — an elderly-looking man who robbed 16 banks between 2009 and 2011, according to the Associated Press.
Authorities suspect that robber was a younger man wearing a mask.

I WAS KIDNAPPED BY A GANG OF WOMEN AND FORCED TO HAVE SEX FOR FOUR DAYS -SOLDIER

A soldier was kidnapped and repeatedly forced to have sex by a gang of women for four days before being dumped on a remote mountain range and stoned, police said.

Cops in Zimbabwe say the 25-year-old was willingly picked up April 19 by two women and a man in a Mercedes Benz who offered him a ride to the city of Mutare.

But, after driving in the right direction for an hour, the driver suddenly changes directions — threatening his victim with a knife to keep quiet.

“One of the female passengers then blindfolded the complainant with a black cloth,” said Manicaland Assistant Inspector Muzondiwa Clean.

The gang, which has not been caught, took the man to a house where they stole $35 in cash and his cellphone before stripping him “nekkid,” reports NewsDay.

Over the following four days, he was ordered to “be intimate” with one of the women “several times.”

On April 23, the gang again blindfolded the man, taking him to the Dangamvura Mountains, where they lobbed rocks at his feet and drove off leaving him for dead.

The soldier managed to make his way to Sakubva Police Station to report his ordeal.

This guy is lucky to be alive. Ironically, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of such a thing happening in Zimbabwe.

Mother Forces Teenage Daughter To Get Pregnant

A woman desperate for another child forced her 14-year-old daughter to get pregnant using syringes of donor sperm, a British judge said.In a ruling reported for the first time Monday, High Court judge Peter Jackson said the mother had behaved in “a wicked and selfish way” that almost defied belief.The judge said the woman, an American divorcee living in Britain with three adopted children, hatched the plan after she was prevented from adopting a fourth.

The scheme involved getting her oldest daughter to inseminate herself with syringes of sperm purchased over the Internet from a Denmark-based company, Cryos International.Jackson said the daughter, identified only as A, “became pregnant at the mother’s request, using donor sperm bought by the mother, with the purpose of providing a fourth child for the mother to bring up as her own.”In his ruling, the judge quoted the teenager as saying said she was shocked by the suggestion, but thought, “If I do this … maybe she will love me more.”“My mum is a very determined person and she does her best not to let anything get in her way if she wants it,” the teenager added.

The judge said the mother also made the teenager use douches of vinegar or lemon and lime juice in hopes of increasing her chances of having a girl.The judge said it was likely but not certain that the daughter soon became pregnant and suffered a miscarriage.

After six more attempts with the donor sperm, she gave birth to a baby boy in July 2011, when she was 17.But midwives at the hospital became alarmed by the odd behavior of A’s mother. Her daughter wanted to breastfeed the baby, but her mother said: “We don’t want any of that attachment thing.”The hospital alerted the authorities, and the children were taken into foster care.

The mother is now serving a five-year jail term for child cruelty.Details of the case were heard during proceedings at the family division of the High Court over the children’s future last year. They were reported for the first time Monday after several British media organizations, including the publisher of The Guardian newspaper, challenged reporting restrictions.

A court order bars identifying the family members in order to protect the children.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA TO ESTABLISH DNA LAB FOR POLICE

Federal Government is planning a forensic and deoxyribonucleic acid laboratory for the police as part of strategies to combating the nation’s security challenges.

Minister of Police Affairs, Caleb Olubolade, who said this during the unveiling of the 2013 Police Week Celebration in Abuja, on Monday, noted that a Presidential Committee had been set up to assess the state of the forensic laboratories currently in use by the Police and other security agencies in the country.

Olubolade said the committee would advise the Federal Government on the modalities for upgrading the available ones and the technical and financial implications of establishing new ones in line with global standards.

The committee, he added, would examine all laws relating to forensic services in the country, with a view to bringing them up to date with what obtains in other climes, especially in the regulation of private forensic practices.

The minister, who decried the absence of modern forensic laboratories in the country, noted that the development had hampered crime investigations by the police and relevant agencies.

According to him, the country cannot continue to depend on other countries for quality and acceptable forensic services.

Olubolade further said the Federal Government would invest in the police and in the provision of forensic laboratories to tackle rising crimes in the country.

The establishment of the laboratories, the minister added, would enhance the operations of the Police and other security agencies at crime scenes, forgery, DNA and paternity investigations as well as in prosecution.

He directed data collection agencies like the Police, Nigeria Immigration Services, Customs, Prisons, Independent National Electoral Commission, National Identity Management Commission among others to be ready for data integration in order to facilitate crime detection and prosecution.

The Committee, which has a month to submit its report, draws its membership from security services, Presidency and the office of the Solicitor-General of the Federation.

On the police week celebrations, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, said the objective of the event was to bridge the widening gap between the public and the police.

He said, “The 2013 Police Week Celebrations will engender improved consciousness on the part of the rank and file of the Force on their responsibility for enhancing mutual trust and confidence in their operations and interaction with the public. It is for this reason that we chose ‘Connecting with the People for a more Effective Policing’ as the theme for the celebrations.”
