HENRY OKAH BAGS 24-YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY BOMBING
Nigerian Henry
Okah has been jailed for 24 years by the South Gauteng High Court in
Johannesburg earlier on Tuesday.
"Effectively,
the accused [Okah] is therefore sentenced to 24 years imprisonment," Judge
Neels Claassen said as he handed down sentence.
On 21 January,
Okah was found guilty on 13 counts of terrorism, including engaging in
terrorist activities, conspiracy to engage in terrorist activities, and
delivering, placing, and detonating an explosive device.
The charges
related to two car bombs in Abuja, Nigeria, in which 12 people were killed and
36 injured on 1 October 2010, the anniversary of the country's independence.
The second bombing
took place in Warri on 15 March 2010 at a post amnesty dialogue meeting. One
person was killed and 11 seriously injured.
In both bombings,
two car bombs went off minutes apart in both places. The cars were parked in
close proximity to each other.
Claassen sentenced
Okah to 12 years imprisonment for each of the bombings and 13 years for the
threats made to the South African government after his arrest in October 2010.
The 13 years would
run concurrently with the 24 years.
In January, during
judgment Claassen said the State had proved Okah's guilt beyond a reasonable
doubt, and his failure to testify meant the evidence against him remained
uncontested.
Okah has denied
any involvement, claiming the charges against him were politically motivated.

LOTTO WINNER BLOWS THROUGH $10.5M; NOW SHE RIDES THE BUS TO WORK
Sharon Tirabassi is a generous soul. So generous that she
gave away half of her $10.5 million Lotto Super 7 winnings and blew through the
rest.
Today, the 35-year-old “penniless millionaire” rides the bus
to work and struggles to make ends meet until her next paycheck.
Nine years ago, Tirabassi, of Hamilton, Ontario Canada,
cashed in her winning Powerball ticket and collected $10,569,000.10.
At first Tirabassi and her then-boyfriend, Vinny, also 35,
were ecstatic at their good fortune. They shared the wealth with family and
close friends, lavishing their loved ones with gifts, cash, cars, and exotic
trips. She gave her parents $1 million cash and divided another $1.75 million
She married Vinny in 2004, and they bought a dream home
together for $515,000. They spent money recklessly, and at one point owned 4
cars — a bright yellow Hummer, a Mustang, a Dodge Charger and a $200,000-plus,
customized Cadillac Escalade. Most of the $200,000 was spent on the Caddy’s
elaborate sound system, which didn’t endear them to their neighbors.
Her personal license plate read: “BABIPHAT,” after Kimora
Lee’s now-defunct clothing line.
Tirabassi said she didn’t like her neighbors. “They didn’t
like young people,” she says.
Her available cash reserves seemed endless. Tirabassi said
she would check her bank account from time to time, but there were so many
zeroes she thought everything was fine.
“You don’t think it’ll go (at the time), right?” she says.
Then one day she checked her bank account and the money was almost gone.
“And that was time for fun to stop and to just go back to
life,” she says.
Her husband Vinny served 2 stints in prison and, eventually,
she lost the house and all the cars (Vinny crashed the Mustang).
Even though she’s broke, she says she’s happier today than
she was when she was a millionaire.
She’s employed as a personal support worker and she provides
for her husband’s 3 kids and her 3 kids from a previous relationship.
What’s left of her jackpot is locked in a mandatory trust
fund for the children, which they will receive when they turn 26.

Kitchen Safety for Children on Their Own
It's
estimated that roughly 7 million children world wide are "on their own"
or are "cared for by a sibling" for short periods of time after
school. Often the kitchen is the first place children go when they get home.
What are the most important food and safety facts that children should know?
Here are some clues to kitchen safety that you will want to remember.
1.
Hands carry lots of germs. The first step in food safety is to wash your hands
before making or eating a snack. All you need is a little soap and water. Make
sure the water is warm, and lather up. Scrub the back and front of your hands,
between the fingers and don't forget your fingernails. Wash for at least 20
seconds. Then rinse under running water and dry with a clean towel.
This
may sound nice but not necessary. Proper hand washing, however, could save you
from becoming ill.
2.
Wash all fruits and vegetables before eating ... use just clear, clean water-no
soap.
3.
When using a knife to cut your food, always cut away from your body.
4.
Microwave cooking is fast but can cause serious burns. Check with a grown-up
for specific directions before using the microwave oven. Some general tips for
safe microwaving include:
Never turn on an empty oven. This can cause
the oven to break.
Read package directions carefully. Make sure
you know how to set the microwave oven controls (for example, 10 seconds,
rather than 10 minutes).
Use only microwave-safe cookware.
Food
coming out of the microwave can be very hot. Never pop any food right from the
microwave into your mouth. Allow the food to cool for several minutes before
eating. This includes letting microwave popcorn set a few minutes before
opening; then open the bag so the opening is pointing away from you. Steam from
the bag can cause serious bums.
Food gets hot in the microwave. Have
potholders handy to remove hot dishes.
5.
Hot liquids, not fire, are the most common cause of burns to children. If you
get burned working in the kitchen:
a)
Go to the sink and hold the burned area under cool, running water.
b)
If the burn begins to blister cover it loosely with a sterile gauze, or a clean
cloth.
c)
Tell a grown-up whenever you are burned. If the burn is severe and hurts badly,
get help from an adult immediately.
6.
Germs grow quickly in foods that are not stored properly (i.e. milk, lunch
meat, hard-cooked eggs, yogurt or foods left out on the counter at room
temperature). Put these foods back in the refrigerator as soon as you've fixed
your snack.
7.
Discard foods like bread, cheese, jelly, fruits, vegetables or any other foods
that have mold spots or look bad. Fruits and vegetables that are shriveled or
have soft spots should be thrown away.
8.
If you spill something, take the time to clean it up properly.
9.
To use a toaster safely:
Keep the toaster away from curtains or towels
or other things that could catch fire.
Plug it directly into the electrical outlet.
Avoid using adapters with many other appliances plugged into the same outlet.
Unplug toasters and other kitchen appliances when not using them.
If
toast gets stuck, unplug the toaster. Do not use any object to remove the toast
from the toaster.
Toasters
can catch on fire. If you see flames from any kitchen appliance, tell a
grown-up immediately. If an adult is not home, call 911.
10.
Use a stove only if you have been trained to use it by an adult. Keep things
that will burn away from the stove. Towels, potholders, plastics and paper
towels can all catch fire quickly when near direct heat or flames.
Keep
an eye on the stove when cooking food. Turn pan handles away from the front so
someone can't knock them off while walking by. Always turn off the stove when
you're done cooking.
11.
If something on the stove catches fire:
a)
Smother the fire with a lid.
b)
Turn off the burner.
c)
Once the fire is out, tell an adult there was a fire.
d)
Leave the house and call 911 if the fire has leaping flames.
DO
NOT THROW BAKING SODA, SALT, WATER OR FLOUR ON A FIRE.
DO
NOT CARRY A BURNING OBJECT TO ANOTHER ROOM

Why We Sneeze — 10 Facts About Sneezing
Sneezing is caused by many factors and it must not be associated just with a breathing problem. Sneezing occurs in response to an irritant in the nasal passages. Close-Up Endorsed by Dentists… Gives Free Dental Health Checks
Close Up, the
number one toothpaste brand in Nigeria recently partnered with Dentists to
engage about 200 consumers in an oral hygiene exercise by giving out free
dental checks in selected clinics in the Magodo and Surulere area of Lagos.
Prior to the Saturday
on which the free dental check was executed, Close Up had created heavy
awareness in these areas and invited many in need of this Dental Check.
Consumers who attended the dental clinic were very grateful for the opportunity
as many had dental issues they were unaware of, and were subsequently counseled
on how to better care for their teeth.
Amongst the
consumers present was Popular Comedian /MC Teju babyface, who stopped by the
Surulere clinic and commended the brand for looking after its consumers.
Speaking on why
this exercise was done, Dexter Adeola, Brand Manager, Close Up toothpaste,
stated that from research, the accessibility to Dentists is extremely low in
Nigeria, with only 15% of Nigerians visiting the Dentist on a yearly basis. It was due to this statistics that Close Up
chose this platform to reach out to families in need of dental help, and use
this platform as an awareness campaign to sensitize people on the need for
proper oral care and the importance of regular Dental check-ups.
Still speaking on
the exercise, Mr Adeola continued that over the years, Close Up has given
health protection to the teeth and gums of millions of Nigerian families, and
the brand has also worked with Health professionals & Dentists Nationwide
to educate Nigerians on the importance of oral care, and the free dental check
is in line with their commitment to ensure Nigerians have the best solutions
and care for their teeth and Gums.
The Close Up
toothpaste brand was launched into the Nigerian market in 1975 and has kept
fresh and protected the mouths and teeth of millions of families across the
country. In other to meet different consumer needs, Close Up comes in variants
such as; Deep Action Red, Deep Action Green, Menthol Chill, White Now, Herbal,
Complete 8 and Complete 8 White .
Close Up continues
to be Nigeria's No. 1 brand, and is set to ensure Nigerians get nothing but the
highest level of Oral Care & toothpaste choice. Recently the Brand was
extolled by the Consumer Protection Council of Nigeria and received a Product

Covenant University Student Expelled For Watching Pornography! Drags School To Court
An expelled student of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun state
has dragged the institution to court, challenging his illegal expulsion over
allegations of watching pornography and secular music on his laptop.
The student, Vwamhi Longji Felix, stated that before he was
expelled his parents had spent not less than N10 million on his school fees and
other expenses. He was a 400 level student of Communication Technology
reportedly expelled on 23rd November 2012, following a night raid by the
Student Affairs’ Unit of the institution. This was followed by his appearance
before the school’s disciplinary panel which recommended his expulsion.
Vanguard reports that
at the resumed hearing of the matter yesterday, the prosecuting counsel Segun
Fatoki, told the court that Felix was allegedly expelled without an opportunity
of a proper hearing or viewing the evidence in accordance with the standard
practice as guaranteed by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
1999.
He also claimed that his expulsion was a violation of Section
44 of Chapter 4 of the student Handbook of the Covenant University.
However, the school in
its counter affidavit stated that in the school hand book it was noted that
students are not allowed to be in possession of unholy films and home video or
circular music tapes, either stored or directly in the computer or listen
through the use of computer radio or any other electronic device when on campus
during an academic session.
Also, the school
claimed that it is an offense that will attract punishment of expulsion for any
student who indulges himself or herself in public display of or be in
possession of pornographic films or photographs, exploring or viewing
pornographic websites on the internet.
Vanguard reports
that after listening to both parties, Justice Mobolaji Ojo of Ogun State High
Court said they should allow every individual to grow life that they need to
live adding that if at age 15 to 17 they don’t live that life, they would live
it when they are 30 to 35 because of too much rules. “A youth must live like a
youth and an adolescent must live like an adolescent. If all of the traits of a
youth are not allowed to be exhibited at the right time, it would be done at
the wrong time,” Vanguard quoted him as saying. The case was adjourned till
March 27, 2013.
